Activities
Toussaint Barboni, Lecturer at the University of Corsica, was recruited in 2012 and reports to the 31st CNU Section. He is a member of the UMR CNRS 6134 Environmental Sciences (SPE) and its related branch is the IUT of Corte (Corsica). He was Director of HSE (Hygiene, Safety and Environment) studies from 1 September 2013 to 31 August 2016. Since 2016, he has been the Head of Department of the DUT HSE, with his research work forming part of the anchor "Forest Fires" project. His research activities concern laboratory and field experimentation with a view to developing decision-making support tools for public policies in the field of forest fire prevention and control. His work focuses primarily on the chemical characterisation of products produced through the combustion of forest fuels.Over the course of the last five years, he has developed a special interest in the characterisation of pollutants (smoke) released during wildfire burns, at two levels. At laboratory level, the combustion is achieved through the use of cone calorimeters (from a few grams to a few kilograms of fuel). On this level, he studied the chemical composition of the various pollutants emitted by fires for the various species of the Mediterranean scrubland. The main pollutants released are CO2H2O, CO, NOx and aerosols. Other compounds are released in lower quantities, but they are just as important from the point of view of their toxicity, such as VOCs for example, some of which are known to be CMR substances. Aerosols are comprised of soot (carbon particles) of at least 1 µm in diameter (Figure 1) and tar.
He has co-authored 36 publications published in peer-reviewed international journals (https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=25627437600), 3 books and 35 national and international communications. H-index of 12. He has collaborated on several research programmes (Proterina-C, Proterina-Due).
